March 28th Update

This week was the first week of our Community Places unit. Students explored the fire station, doctor's office, post office, and restaurant at centers throughout the week. In speech group, friends enjoyed delivering mail to all their classmates and visiting the big mailbox in our classroom. Students also got to train at the fire station. They climbed the ladder, practiced spraying the hose, and jumping over obstacles in the hallway. Everyone also enjoyed the restaurant/bakery center, and of course, the doctor. You’ll be happy to know all of our classroom babies are healthy and in good shape. Students liked making bakery hats and special cupcakes. In music therapy group, we took turns answering the door to see who was there. We also drove our cars to community places.

Enjoy some pictures from our week. Have a great weekend!

March 21st Update

We started our week off celebrating St. Patrick's Day! Those leprechauns seemed to cause trouble in other classrooms—but not ours! They left us some special pots with treasure to use in our Speech group. Students had fun and got nice and messy exploring our pots of gold and treasure with baking soda and vinegar. This week, we also started our Community Unit, which will take us all the way to Spring Break! The focus to begin our unit is on our houses. Everyone worked hard to create their own house, complete with an outside, inside, and furniture. They are eager to bring these home, but we will keep them at school as we learn about community places in the coming weeks and build our Classroom Community. Our shared reading book this week was Maisy's House. Maisy gets ready for her day, doing different activities throughout her home, like brushing her teeth, getting her breakfast, and getting ready for her friend to visit. In Music Therapy, we enjoyed going up and down with Ms. Conley's stretchy band and wishing away Thursday's rainy weather with the rainsticks and thunder drums. Finally, we had 2 of our 3 Child Safety Lessons brought to us by "Mr. Josh" from the Children's Advocacy Center of Greater Rochester (formerly Bivona). The students did a great job staying in the group to learn the five safety rules. I will send home a handout for the safety rules so you can also talk about them at home with your child.

March 14th Update

March continues to cruise on... This week we learned about dinosaurs.  Our shared reading book was Dinosaurs by Jill McDonald. We had fun learning about how dinosaurs lived long ago and were very big creatures. Some have horns, others have spikes.. some have long necks and others have sharp teeth. Watch out for the Dinosaur masks we will taking home on Friday.  Our "Dino Digging" center was a busy spot in the classroom.  Students could dig in the sand to discover dinosaur bones and skeletons. Some friends enjoyed matching the bones with the pictures to see what the dinosaur really looked like long ago.  In Speech group, we made dinosaurs out of a waffle and fruit.  We got to decide if we wanted our dinosaur to have a long neck or short neck and what type of spikes or horns they had. It was a delicious treat- everyone loves fruit! We also enjoyed Music Therapy group this week!  In addition to playing instruments and singing, students spent time helping the mommy dinosaurs find her baby dinosaurs. No dinosaur week is complete without singing "We are the Dinosaurs"  and dancing through the classroom- our dinosaur masks were a big hit and students worked hard to have them ready to wear for our group. A special thank you to Ms. P for always making my cardboard creation dreams a reality!  Have a great weekend.
